Weekend Arts Roundup: Dance Concert, Play Excerpts, T-Shirt Printing
by Luke Taylor and Marianne Combs
May 30, 2013
MPR News Arts Reporter Marianne Combs joins The Current's Steve Seel and Jill Riley to talk about three distinct arts events happening in the Twin Cities this weekend, ranging from dance to short plays to silk-screening.
TU Dance: TU Dance closes out its ninth performance season with a spring dance concert of world premiere works by Uri Sands and Camille A. Brown. Sands presents two premieres that explore themes of vice and escape of the everyday. Brown's new piece was specially commissioned for this concert. Also on the program is a piece by Dwight Rhoden, set to the music of Beethoven. The shows are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the O'Shaughnessy Auditorium in St. Paul.
Works-in-Progress 2013: For six months, seven featured artists -- Jeesun Choi, Thalia Kostmanhas, Andrew Lee Dolan, Peter Heeringa, Hayley Finn, Sam Johnson and Zainab Musa -- been given full access to the Red Eye Theater, including technical support and feedback from their artistic peers as they develop their stage pieces. The process culminates in a smorgasbord event consisting of a 15-minute excerpt from each of the five selected projects. These public performances run Thursday, May 30, to Sunday, June 2, at Red Eye Theater in Minneapolis.
Art Hounds T-Shirt Printing Party: The Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art, and then they share those finds with the MPR News audience. Each year, there is an Art Hounds T-Shirt design contest; this year's winner will be chosen from three finalists at the Art Hounds T-Shirt Printing Party, held this Saturday, June 1, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Kickstand Press in Northeast Minneapolis. The winning design will be featured on the official 2013 Art Hounds t-shirt that will be sold at the State Fair.
Marianne Combs joins The Current's Morning Show for the Weekend Arts Roundup every Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Read about all the latest arts news at the State of the Arts blog at mprnews.org.
