Birthday Highlight:

Robert Plant, of Led Zeppelin, is 66 today. With a career spanning more than 40 years and possessing a powerful wide vocal range (including his trademark screams), Plant is regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of popular music, and had influenced singers like Freddie Mercury, and Axl Rose. In 2011, Rolling Stone readers voted him into the top position in the magazine's list of the best lead singers of all time.

1966 - "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep," by The Temptations, was released.

1973 - One of the great '70s tearjerkers, "Angie" by The Rolling Stones (written about Bowie's ex-wife, Angie), was capturing AM and FM airwaves. It would appear on The Stones' soon-to-be-released Goats Head Soup.

1980 - John Lennon began recording his final album, Double Fantasy. It would be released on November 17th by the newly-formed Geffen Records and would win the 1982 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

2008 - The daughter of late country star Johnny Cash called the use of her father's name to endorse a US presidential candidate "appalling." Country star John Rich implied Mr Cash would have backed Republican hopeful John McCain while appearing at a rally in Florida, according to media reports. Writing on her website, Roseanne Cash called the remarks "presumptuous". "Even I would not presume to say publicly what I 'know' he thought or felt," she added.
