9:30 Coffee Break: Musical Plagiarism
January 26, 2015
This morning news broke that Tom Petty and ELO's Jeff Lynne won a plagiarism lawsuit against Sam Smith. People (among them Petty's lawyers) noticed a similarity between Petty's, "I Won't Back Down," and Smith's, "Stay with Me". The story reminded us that there are a lot of songs that we play that have been accused of musical plagiarism.
What songs that have been in a plagiarism lawsuit should we play for today's Coffee Break?
Songs Played:
(The Original)Chuck Berry - "You Can't Catch Me" (The Beatles "Come Together")
The Verve - "Bittersweet Symphony" (The Rolling Stones "The Last Time")
(The Original) Marvin Gaye - "Got to Give it Up" (Robin Thicke "Blurred Lines")
Coldplay - "Viva La Vida" (Joe Satriani "If I Could Fly")
Ray Parker Jr. - "Ghostbusters Theme" (Huey Lewis "I Want a New Drug")
