MPR News Arts Reporter Marianne Combs joins Jill Riley and Sean McPherson to talk about arts events where two cultures come together and interact in some way.

Birds of a Feather — This is a performance featuring two different vocal groups, Prairie Fire Lady Choir and the Nightingale Trio. Prairie Fire's repertoire consists of pop, folk and Americana music, whereas Nightingale Trio performs traditional Slavic music. This culture brings these two groups together in one performance. The concert happens Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m., at the Woman's Club of Minneapolis.

Don Quixote — The traditional Indian dance company Sahrdaya Foundation performs the classic Spanish tale. "They're taking the book and turning it into a combination of dance and poetry and music and theater altogether using their particular cultural take on it," Marianne explains. This performance takes place Friday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the St. Paul Student Center Theater at the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus.

Hmong-Lao/Lao-Hmong Friendship Play — This play stars two real-life best friends, May Lee-Yang and Saymoukda Duangphouxay Vongsay, who are both great local playwrights and actors. Their production was inspired by the fact both are from the country of Laos yet are from two different ethnic groups. Hmong-Lao/Lao-Hmong Friendship Play celebrates the connections between the two women and their respective cultures. This play premieres at Intermedia Arts in Minneapolis on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m., with additional shows on Friday and Saturday nights.
