MPR News Arts Reporter Marianne Combs joins Jill Riley and Sean McPherson to share a Weekend Arts Roundup that's all about … murder! Set to delightful music. It's what's on the bill at a number of area theaters.

Murder for Two — This play at the Park Square Theatre in St. Paul stars actors Nic Delcambre and Andrea Wollenberg who, between them, play all the characters and play the piano (it's a musical comedy). The story centers on a small town policeman with dreams of making it to detective. At the surprise birthday party of a great American novelist, the writer is killed. With the nearest detective an hour away, the small-top cop jumps at the chance to prove his sleuthing skills. Murder for Two runs until Nov. 1.

Glensheen — In 1977, a pair of sensational murders in Duluth seized the attention of Minnesotans. The murders of Elisabeth Congdon and her nurse, Velma Pietila, at the waterfront Glensheen mansion made instant household names of the people accused: Marjorie Congdon Caldwell and her husband Roger Caldwell. But it was just the start of a bizarre tale. Now the History Theatre in St Paul presents the story as a musical, titled Glensheen. It features music by Chan Poling of the Suburbs. The show opens this Saturday, Oct. 3, and runs until Oct. 25.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street — Stephen Sondheim's musical is about an unjustly exiled barber who returns to 19th-century London seeking vengeance. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop. Together they plot a delicious plan with deadly consequences. Theater Latté Da's production of Sweeney Todd stars local actors Sally Wingert, Tyler Michaels and Mark Benninghofen, and is directed by Peter Rothstein. It runs until Oct. 25 at the Ritz Theater in Minneapolis.
