On this date in 1993, Nirvana recorded their MTV Unplugged special at Sony Studios in New York. Nirvana played a set list composed largely of lesser-known material and cover versions of songs by The Vaselines, David Bowie, the Meat Puppets and Lead Belly. The resulting album would go on to win the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996.

The Nirvana special was early in a series of "unplugged" specials, and it recharged an interest in acoustic music. As such, there are a number of well-known songs with full arrangements that have been covered acoustically. Sometimes an acoustic version of the original becomes more popular than the full-band arrangement. And here at The Current, a number of bands have recorded memorable acoustic versions of their own or cover songs while visiting us in the studio.

So for today's Coffee Break, what acoustic versions of well-known songs do you want to hear? Send us your requests.

Songs Played

Nirvana "All Apologies" (Unplugged)
