9:30 Coffee Break: Unconventional Singers
by Jim McGuinn and Bob Collins
November 23, 2015
Last Friday, with the release of Adele's new album, 25, we celebrated Adele and other artists known for their stunning vocals with a Coffee Break of tracks by spectacular singers.
In the wake of that, listener Bob in St. Paul emailed us to suggest "a Coffee Break featuring established singers whose vocals are more on the idiosyncratic side."
These are the singers who probably wouldn't get very far pursuing a vocal-performance degree at a university or music conservatory, but we love their songs anyway. In fact, it may be their distinctive voices that make us love their music so much.
So for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that feature an unconventional or unique singing voice? Send us your requests.
Songs Played
The White Stripes "Fell in Love with a Girl"
Tiny Tim "Tip-Toe Thru' the Tulips With Me"
Lou Reed "Walk on the Wild Side"
Bob Dylan "Here Comes Santa Claus"
Nina Simone "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"
Tom Waits "Filipino Box Spring Hog"
Ween "Push the Little Daisies"
