MPR Cube Critic Stephanie Curtis joins Jade and Sean McPherson to talk about The Revenant.

The Revenant, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is a western film inspired by the life of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass. It's set in 1823 in the unsettled wilderness of the Louisiana Purchase when a hunting party of trappers and hunters is ambushed and a man is left behind.

"It's totally entertaining," Stephanie said. "It did get a little bit long for me but I loved the beauty. It was so gorgeous."

The director wanted it to be filmed with natural light and practical effects, making the shoot, that was filmed in winter in Canada, brutal.

"You can't help but be enveloped in the landscape and ask yourself 'Would I last for 5 minutes?'" Stephanie said.

One of the big questions surrounding this film is whether Leo will win an Oscar for Best Actor.

"He might actually win this year," Stephanie said. "It's always so hard to tell. There's no front runner this year."

The Revenant is rated R and is playing in select theaters in Minnesota and across the U.S.

MPR's Cube Critics, Stephanie Curtis and Euan Kerr, join The Current's Morning Show to talk about films every Friday at 8:30 a.m.
