Kendrick Lamar went into the 58th GRAMMY Awards with 11 nominations including Album of the Year, beating out Taylor Swift and Alabama Shakes as the most nominated act. At the end of the night, Lamar took home five awards including Best Rap Album (To Pimp a Butterfly), Best Rap Song ("Alright"), Best Rap Performance ("Alright"), Best Rap/Sung Collaboration ("These Walls") and Best Music Video ("Bad Blood," with Taylor Swift).

To open his groundbreaking GRAMMY Awards performance, Lamar walked out to a prison set on stage with four black men, all wearing chains around their ankles and wrists, first performing an instrumental version of "The Blacker the Berry" off To Pimp a Butterfly. As the lights dimmed, dancers and drummers clad in traditional African attire surround a large fire while Lamar performs "Alright" and a previously unheard track. At its conclusion, Lamar stands solo in front of a projected image of Africa with the word "Compton" overlayed. The performance alludes to Kunta Kinte of the Roots miniseries, whom Lamar references on To Pimp a Butterfly.
