When one first hears the name L.A. Salami, it may appear a psuedonym of sorts, but it's actually the pragmatically economized stage name of the artist whose full name is Lookman Adekunle Salami.

In town for a show at the 7th Street Entry, L.A. Salami and his band — guitarist Mark Thorne, bassist Frank Styles and drummer Danny Brooks — stopped in The Current studio for a session hosted by Mary Lucia.

"When I listen to your records, I love your words," Lucia says. "And I think, are you identifying as a storyteller, a philosopher, a poet, or just a dude in a band?"

"I think, sometimes, when arrogance possesses me, I would like to think of myself as one of those," Salami replies. "But yeah, I don't know. I just play music and try to be a poet sometimes, try to philosophize, whatever. It's whatever people make of it."

L.A. Salami appears to be a bit of a chameleon when it comes to musical styles as well. Among the three songs he performed at The Current, the first featured an almost Strokes-like layering of electric guitars over driving rhythm; the second bore a distinct Americana twang; and the third was L.A. Salami performing a Dylanesque guitar, vocals and harmonica solo tune.
