Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants, has died of Lou Gehrig's disease at age 57.

Hillenburg, who was a marine biology teacher before pursuing a career in animation, centered the series around the adventures of a sea sponge who physically resembles a rectangular kitchen sponge in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom.
