'Thrilled To Be Here,' Bailen perform a live set in The Current studio

It seemed destined to happen — at long last, Bailen performed in The Current studio on Monday. Bailen had attempted to get here in February, but a relentless Minnesota snowstorm kept them at bay. Thankfully, they were able to connect with The Current just a couple weeks later in the much more hospitable climate of Austin, Texas, where they performed a creekside set during the SXSW music festival.
But with June's kinder weather, Bailen finally visited The Current studio in St. Paul. The morning after opening for Hozier at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, the three siblings — Julia, Daniel and David Bailen — got to play songs and have a conversation with host Jade.
Just as it seemed to be destiny for Bailen to perform at The Current, it seems preordained that the Bailen siblings would have careers in music. Children of musicians, Julia, Daniel and David grew up in the musical orbit of New York City, where their many music pursuits included singing in the children's choir for Met Opera productions.
"Our house is this crazy port of musical culture," David says. "We'd wake up with a chamber group in the living room, and we're rehearsing in the bedroom and my dad's teaching in the backroom and there's someone practicing violin in the bathroom. There's always something musical happening, and [our parents] definitely imparted that unto us."
"But as far as them pushing us to do this — that didn't happen at all," Daniel adds. "They weren't crazy stage parents or anything like that."
