With the popularity of Hozier's song, "Nina Cried Power," Mary Lucia watched the Netflix documentary by Liz Garbus, What Happened, Miss Simone?, and shares her thoughts about it with you.

Simone, whose deep, raspy voice made her a unique jazz figure and later helped chronicle the Civil Rights movement, died on April 21, 2003, of natural causes after a long illness. She was 70.

"It's a sad life," Mary says. "There are ups and downs, but there's an amazing body of work for you to go back and explore."
