This week, I want to talk about a documentary about a music mogul — and you never hear that word ever because it's very old school. But Clive Davis is very old-school, as in, "I don't hear a hit! Go back and write a hit!" or "You're going to cover this song."

The documentary is called Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives, and it combs through Davis's decades of being in the music business. Everyone quoted in this documentary — including Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen and Steven Tyler — say that Davis "had the golden ear." He could hear a hit.

Not every song in this film may be your favorite music, because Davis did discover Barry Manilow and launched his career as well as the career of Kenny G. But these records sold crazy amounts. Crazy amounts!

Davis was also a visionary in the sense that he, quite early on, saw hip hop becoming a part of the whole musical lexicon. So to think that this is the same guy who worked with Kenny G and Notorious B.I.G. is pretty crazy.

Speaking of music visionaries, I also remember Terry Katzman in this video.

Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives is available on Netflix and on other streaming platforms.
