It's the newest Chart ever, but with an old number 1!

It's a week of firsts on this the first chart of the new year. There's a record breaking number of new entries, thirteen! But for the first time ever, the Number One song has been there before, Jan 30th 2019, almost exactly a year ago, but that was without the Minnesota Orchestra! Dessa starts the year with a few 'normal' shows on the West Coast and Colorado. She also continues to break out of that box occasionally like the talk she's giving in Boulder on January 23rd: "Senseless Love; Torch Songs and Brain Science." She returns to the First Avenue Mainroom on February 27.

It seems to occur earlier every year, the big festival line-ups are starting to emerge. Coachella caused a stir last week with Rage Against The Machine as one of the headliners. This week, it's Bonnaroo, with headliners Tool, Tame Impala and ... LIZZO!! She seems to have leapfrogged over some other artists who are lower on the bill: The 1975, Lana Del Rey and Vampire Weekend, who get some consolation by being #2 on our first chart of the year, the highest new entry. We are giving away tickets to this year's Bonnaroo Festival, which happens June 11-14.

Meanwhile Lizzo, our most successful Chart artist of 2019, starts at Number Three. She's bowling them over down under right now, showing care and attention to detail by "acknowledging the bushfire tragedy" while putting on a stunning performance at The Sydney Opera House!

More local faves: Bon Iver are also back at 7, but have had to cancel some planned shows with TU Dance, amid accusations of sexual misconduct by its founder.

Their first new album in 5 years Always Tomorrow is coming soon and they'll play March 9th at First Avenue's Mainroom. But Best Coast, new at 8, are also trying to reach out to the people of Australia, selling some of their stuff online and donating it to Wildlife Rescue on the Sunshine Coast.

In case you missed more big local music news around the holidays, Atmosphere dropped the album Whenever by surprise the week before Xmas and a lovely colab with Nikki Jean comes in at #14. Their "Wherever" tour starts with a sold out show at First Avenue next week and will end at The Palace, Feb 28th.

There's still some tickets left for our 15th Birthday Party at First Ave Jan 18th and one of our guests Black Pumas are another new entry at sixteen and we made the Grammy nominees our Album of the Week.

Busy with theatre, symphony and opera projects recently, #19 Rufus Wainwright hasn't put out a "regular pop album" since 2012! There's still no date set for release yet but as he says on his site, "It should be considered a bookend" with his 1998 debut.

The only group with songs from two different albums to be on our Top 89 of 2019, Big Thief start 2020 in our basement space this week. They travel to Europe for a massive string of shows, then Japan, Australia and New Zealand later in the spring and have also booked a big festival appearance at Newport Folk Festival in July.

Submit your Chart Show ballot this week for a chance to win tickets to Michael Kiwanuka at the Palace Theatre in St. Paul, MN on February 3, 2020.
