As it nears 4 p.m., the record section at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis swells with attendees in classic “sad girl” music garb: Dr. Martens, tote bags, femme energy and heavy eyeliner are on display. This is a safe space… that’s how those in the room describe it. 

The speakers come on and the first song from the album “the record” by boygenius — the supergroup created by Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus — begins playing. Hands grip tighter around each other and tears begin to fall. It’s the moment they’ve all been waiting for.

Ellie Lazarchic, 17, and Sophia McQuillan, 15, were in attendance with Ellie’s mom, Jennifer.

When the music first started, Ellie said she was stunned. “We held hands, we weren’t ready. They just casually started it,” she said.

Sophia sent Ellie the Instagram post about the event and they agreed — they had to be there. 

“Yeah, this was happening no matter what,” Sophia said about attending. 

Listening parties have been around for decades, said Jim Novak, music buyer at Electric Fetus. Some are held in secret, like Taylor Swift’s 2019 release of her album “Lover.”

Others might be at a party with the artist and other industry insiders. Although the pandemic made in-person musical gatherings nearly impossible three years ago, Novak said they’re now seeing a resurgence.

Bands and labels are working with local record stores to host listening parties, scheduled at the same time in every city across the globe. And both sides benefit from the deal: Fans get to experience new music a few days early and get access to free and exclusive merch, and the music industry — labels and stores both — can advertise to the audience with a fan-centric experience. It’s a win-win. 

“Everywhere in the world, people are experiencing the music at the same time. It just adds to that sense of community. It builds that relationship with the artist and the fans all feel like they’re experiencing something together,” Novak said.

Recent listening parties at Electric Fetus have included artists such as Lana Del Ray, Paramore and Fall Out Boy. 

Novak said Tuesday’s boygenius party topped them all with the largest crowd. For many, it was the first time they have ever been to an event like this. 

“It is a good way to connect with other fans of the artist and have a good time … the idea of hearing [the album] early is fun and makes you feel special,” Beth Tompkins said. 

This all comes at a time when concert ticket prices are on rise. Earlier this year, large entertainment company Ticketmaster drew intense ire and scrutiny after fans were priced out of massive concert experiences to see mega-stars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. Minnesota U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has led the fight against the company in Congress. 

“A lot of these high fees are going on because there is no incentive for fair prices and superior offerings and innovation if you’re the only company in town,” Klobuchar said in an interview with NPR.

Listening sessions, meanwhile, offer a similar musical experience at no charge. Novak says it’s also changing how fans socialize and increasing vinyl records more than ever before. 

“Having a piece of physical media, it’s kind of like having a band t-shirt or things like that. But you get to experience the art over and over again, on demand for yourself … It's more physical, it's more intense, because you actually do have to listen to it.”

And with a room of over 150 people, it’s clear fans feel the same way. 

Carly Michalkiewicz, Calli Hadler and Kate Maiers were decked out in boygenius merch and waiting for the session to begin around 3:30 p.m. It’s a classic fan friendship: Hadler and Maiers met at a Phoebe Bridgers concert and stayed in touch. Hadler and Michalkiewicz both attend the University of Minnesota, where they bonded in a hallway over a Phoebe Bridgers T-shirt.

Hadler said, “Oh my god, I love your shirt. I have the same one.” 

Six months later they mirror the supergroup: A trio that has bonded over their love of music and womanhood. 

“It just makes me happy seeing a bunch of women coming together for a work of art created by three women, and queer women. It makes me excited to have a space for us,” Michalkiewicz said. “An area where we can all hold hands and be happy with the music and find a safe space to appreciate the same art.”

They each said they always have a “visceral” reaction when they hear songs for the first time they’ve been waiting for. Ahead of the album's March 31 debut, boygenius released four singles. Fans knew what to expect, and many shared that they were prepared to cry. 

That includes Hadler, who quickly got emotional hearing the third song on the album entitled “Emily I’m Sorry,” about a relationship that seems to be coming apart. 

“I just think about all the mistakes you can make, you can try so hard to have a good relationship with someone that just doesn’t work out and it’s really sad, and it can be your own fault,” she said.

As the event ended, fans went to the check-out area and pre-order the album, notably on vinyl. They debriefed on the session, heads nodding profusely and tears drying up. Many have plans to relisten Friday evening, headphones in, alone in their rooms, lights off and vulnerability on full blast.

But the takeaway, after the first listen? 

“I’m a changed person,” Michalkiewicz said.

Inside a Twin Cities couple’s ‘Trans-Glam-Punk-Rock Love Story’

Today in 1984, producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jack Antonoff was born - making him 39 today. He is the lead singer of rock band Bleachers and the guitarist and drummer in the pop rock band Fun. Aside from his work with Bleachers and Fun, Antonoff has worked as a songwriter and record producer with various artists, including Taylor Swift, the 1975, Lorde, St. Vincent, Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, Fifth Harmony, Kevin Abstract, Carly Rae Jepsen, the Chicks, Tegan and Sara and Clairo. He has often been credited with having a significant impact on the sound of contemporary popular music.

1928 - One of country music's most influential characters, William Orwell “Lefty” Frizzell, was born. Among the artists he influenced were George Jones, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Merle Haggard, and John Fogerty. Frizzell died of a massive stroke on July 19, 1975. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame in 1982.

1949 - RCA Victor introduced the 45 RPM single record, which had been in development since 1940. The 7-inch disc was designed to compete with the long-playing record introduced by Columbia a year earlier. Both formats offered better fidelity and longer playing time than the 78 RPM record that was currently in use.

1958 - Chuck Berry's rock 'n' roll classic "Johnny B. Goode" single was released. It entered the U.S. charts six weeks later and peaked at No. 8 on the chart.

, The Beatles played a "live television performance" in front of a studio of screaming fans (one of whom was Phil Collins). The four songs used in the film were "Tell Me Why," "I Should Have Known Better," "And I Love Her," and "She Loves You."

1967 - Jimi Hendrix set fire to his guitar live on stage for the first time when he was appearing at The Astoria in London. It was the first night of a 24-date tour with The Walker Brothers, Cat Stevens and Engelbert Humperdink. The Fender Stratocaster burned on stage by Hendrix sold for £280,000 (about $500,000) at a 2008 London auction of rock memorabilia.

, their seventh studio album, on their own Swan Song Records in the U.K. 

 has now been certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for U.S. sales in excess of 3 million copies.

1984 - Kenny Loggins started a three-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Footloose," the theme from the movie with the same name.

1995 - Jimmy Page escaped being knifed when a fan rushed the stage at a Page and Plant gig at Auburn Hills, Mich. The fan was arrested and told police he wanted to kill Jimmy Page because of the Satanic music he was playing.

1995 - Tejano singer Selena died after being shot by her former personal assistant and former fan club president in Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 23. Reactions to her death were compared to those following the deaths of John Lennon and Elvis Presley. (Bonus: The podcast

1996 - Jeffrey Lee Pierce (Gun Club) died of a brain hemorrhage. He was 37.

2019 - Rapper/songwriter Nipsey Hussle died at age 33 after being shot multiple times in Los Angeles. His debut studio album 

 was released in February 2018 to critical acclaim and commercial success, and it was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019.

Guitarist Mick Ralphs, founding member of Mott The Hoople and Bad Company, is 79.

March 31 in Music History: Happy Birthday Jack Antonoff

The first track on boygenius' record poses a question, sung by three voices in harmony: "Who would I be without you?" It's not that the three songwriters of 

 — want to imagine possible futures or interrogate the past; instead, they're asking the question as a reminder to cherish our most formative relationships, to honor the vital role these intimacies can play in shaping our very sense of self. "My life is defined by my friends," Dacus 

 — the band's aptly titled first full-length album — is a celebration of that fact.

Each of the three members of boygenius had promising solo careers when they formed the group in 2018 and released a self-titled EP, critically acclaimed for its elegant songwriting and rapturously beloved by fans who saw the trio as a whip-smart Holy Trinity of indie rock. After that, each member went back to her individual career — Baker and Dacus each released level-up third records; Bridgers collaborated with everyone from Conor Oberst to Taylor Swift, and her sophomore solo album earned her Grammy nominations — and all politely declined to answer frequent questions about when the band was getting back together. 

But in June 2020, unbeknownst to the rest of the world, Bridgers tentatively sent Baker and Dacus a demo of a new song and asked if boygenius could be resurrected. Baker made a Google Drive; each member started adding songs; by January 2022, the three of them went to Malibu, Calif. to make a record. They spent 10 hours in the studio per day, every day, for a month. In the bio that accompanies the album, Baker lovingly says the hardcore recording schedule is the result of the songwriters — whose tight-knit friendship predates their supergroup and grew, in part, out of their shared early experiences in the music industry —  being "at least one type of the same psycho. The Venn diagrams overlap in 'Every day for a month.' " I hear echoes of her words in a 

 that, for me, sums up close friendship immaculately: "me (insane) talking to my friend (also insane): ur not insane. and neither am i." Sometimes friendship is simply another word for finding your kind of psycho.

, or merely context for its creation. It's why and how this album was made. More than just the topic of many of these songs, friendship is the spark that animates its deepest inquiries and the force that grounds its existential questions about how we care for each other, why we choose each other and how this kind of closeness can transform us. Perhaps that sounds like terrain usually reserved for romance, but these 

love songs. Bridgers describes writing that first boygenius EP that way, 

 falling in love." You can hear a reverence for friendship when Dacus sings, "It feels good to be known so well" on the standout single "True Blue." Or in the video for "Not Strong Enough," composed of footage they shot of a day spent together at an amusement park — making each other laugh, posing for goofy photos, falling asleep on each other's shoulders. Or in the touching last line of "Leonard Cohen," another Dacus-led song dedicated to her bandmates: "I never thought you'd happen to me."

Many songs on the record were written directly about experiences the three have shared. The opening verse of "Leonard Cohen," for example, narrates a long drive they took during which Bridgers urged them all to listen closely to a song she adored and then, having gotten so absorbed in her listening, missed their exit. The lyrics frame the mistake, and the extra hour it added to their drive, as an opportunity: "It gave us more time to embarrass ourselves / telling stories we wouldn't tell anyone else." Baker started writing "Anti-Curse" after going swimming in a too-high tide during a boygenius writing trip in Malibu, she told 

, and the near-drowning brought her a strange kind of calm. In "Anti-Curse," she sings of "making peace with my inevitable death" and in the very next line, the first thing she thinks of is her loved ones: "I guess I did alright, considering / Tried to be a halfway decent friend."

It's not just the lyrics of these songs that are a testament to these relationships, but the structures themselves. In the climax of "Not Strong Enough," each member sings the same lyric — "always an angel, never a god" — in her own emotional cadence over mounting tension, until the thundering instrumentation drops out and one single voice takes the lead, immediately surrounded by the others' harmonies. Something similar happens in "$20," where each voice sings distinct lyrics in the bridge, complementing each other's rage and resignation. In writing songs this way, each singer is given space to inhabit her own perspective and personality without contradicting the others, their voices frequently overlapping like an urgent and spirited conversation with your best friend. "Satanist" sounds lighthearted, but it's essentially a song about whether someone would stand by us if we changed. Each verse pictures a slightly different path, but that question — 

 — hovers over them all; there's something sweet about hearing each bandmate name that fear in her own way, then join in singing on her friends' verses as if quietly answering in the affirmative.

These are some of the album's most profound moments: not just celebrations of friendship but considerations of the more complicated, difficult corners of this type of intimacy. "We're In Love," a swooning, Dacus-led ballad, is a tribute to Bridgers and Baker. It's an intense song, one that acknowledges the risks of such vulnerability from its very first line: "You could absolutely break my heart / That's how I know that we're in love." It doesn't take the long-term certainty of this connection for granted: "If you rewrite your life," Dacus sings later, "may I still play a part? / In the next one, will you find me?" Baker initially rejected the song, arguing to keep it off 

 — later, after coming around to it, she admitted that the song is a reminder that "it's still a learning process" for her "to know the difference between being scrutinized and being seen." In light of Baker's admission, the song sounds like the acknowledgement of a simple truth: that our friends might truly know us — our flaws and our mistakes included — and keep choosing to love us anyway. 

The album's final track, "Letter To An Old Poet," starts with heartbreak, too. When Bridgers softly sings, "I love you / I don't know why / I just do," she isn't marveling at the wonder of being close to someone but exhausted by the mess of it, surveying the fallout from a toxic entanglement. But as the song progresses and Baker and Dacus join her on harmonies, she gains her nerve. She doesn't sing alone for the rest of the song. "You don't know me," they all sing, defiant, and then the song is suddenly familiar, interpolating the cathartic end of "Me and My Dog" from the 

 EP. The melody and imagery — Bridgers, her dog, the moon — are the same as that earlier song, but here, one lyric inverts the former version's heartache: "I want to be happy." 

When the three members sing a similar line together at the end of "Me and My Dog," it seems to validate the narrator's pain, to amplify it and make it legible. At the end of "Letter To An Old Poet," meanwhile, after hearing Bridgers admit both her exhaustion and growing self-regard, the lyric sounds like the lifting of a burden. "I can't feel it yet," they sing in the album's final line, "but I am waiting." When our friends share our truth, these songs imply, it can help us see ourselves in a new light: as someone whose pain is meaningful but temporary; as someone capable of patience and deserving of happiness. And if we can't see these things in ourselves, 

 demonstrates what it means to see them in each other, to sing backup on someone else's verse until we're ready to write our own. We need these essential effects of friendship, these songs seem to say: Where would we be without them?

On 'the record,' boygenius honors how friendship shapes our very sense of self

This week, hear new music from U.K. acts Olivia Dean and Jungle, Australian post-punk outfit RVG, Boricua artist Ana Macho, and Minneapolis rock band Gully Boys. Plus, Jenny Lewis is back with another single from her forthcoming album 

The buzzy U.K. singer, Olivia Dean, has a dreamy, glitchy quality to her music that is reminiscent of Imogen Heap or Bon Iver. Her debut album, 

, will be out June 30. On the record, she’s showing her growth and shifting alt-pop; as Dean shared about the album, “This doesn’t have to be a destination, it’s just where I’m at now.”

Jenny Lewis has crafted the sort of indie career many would love to have; child star of cult beloved films, lead singer of cult beloved Rilo Kiley, and a solo career that stays indie even if she opens for big pop stars like Harry Styles (who recently made a cameo in the music video for her song “Puppy and a Truck”). Lewis’s new album continues her recent unlucky-in-love Americana streak, with 

 coming out June 9. Beck helped inspire the album by hosting a weeklong workshop that kicked Lewis into new, free-form songs leaning on clichés, but that still sound fresh and new.

Aussie post-punkers RVG released their critically acclaimed debut record five years ago, leading to opening acts for Pixies, Kurt Vile, and Sleaford Mods. The four-piece are releasing their third album, 

, on June 2. The dark and sludgy “Squid” shows the influence of producer James Trevascus (who has previously worked with Nick Cave), and features an acoustic guitar once owned by Kate Bush.

Jungle, “Candle Flame” feat. Erick The Architect

The dance floor-jamming U.K. duo, Jungle, are feeling even freer with their new song, “Candle Flame” feat. Erick The Architect. The funk- and soul-infused sound will fill their fourth album, 

, which is coming out August 11. J Lloyd of the band told NME, “I think for Jungle, it’s actually really the most honest record we’ve made.”

Ana Macho, “El Gran Varón” feat. La Brega

As part of a compilation celebrating the music of Puerto Rico, 

, Puerto Rican trans non-binary pop musician Ana Macho covered Willie Colón’s version of “El Gran Varón.” The song was already ahead of its time when it was released in 1989, discussing a queer person’s relationship with their hypermasculine father, but Macho gives the song an ‘80s new wave/dance fervor, and said, “I really wanted to make it feel like a song that a queer person in the Eighties might hear.”

The local rockers, Gully Boys, are back with a new single about trusting someone who probably didn’t deserve it. It’s a bright and punchy single from the now four-piece who last released 

 back in 2021 and “See You See” in 2022. Hopefully this is just a taste of what’s to come from the band this year.

Music, in many ways, can become outdated. Use of certain instruments or production style can show a song’s age. Another way music can date itself is through the lyrics. Ever hear a song and question if it would have been written in todays’ world? With the existence of cell phones, songs about beepers, telephone lines, missed calls, or handwritten letters would have sounded very different, or maybe wouldn’t have been written at all. Would Outkast be telling us to “shake it like a polaroid picture” had “Hey Ya” been written in 2023? Let’s explore some songs that contain out-of-date subject matter. My true love for music blossomed from my love of vinyl. I became a vinyl record enthusiast at a young age and worked at a record store all throughout my teen years. Tracy Chapman was born on this day in 1964, making her 59 today. Best-known for her singles "Fast Car," "Give Me One Reason," and "Talkin' 'Bout A Revolution," she is a multi-platinum and four-time Grammy Award-winning artist who has released eight studio albums, the latest of which came out in 2008. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she received a ukulele at age three and started writing songs at age eight. According to a 2018 NPR interview, she says that she may have been first inspired to play the guitar by the television show "Hee Haw."

1957 - Buddy Knox became the first artist in the rock 'n' roll era to write his own No. 1 hit when "Party Doll" topped the U.S. singles chart. Knox would go on to score four more Top 40 hits between 1957 and 1961.

1963 - The Chiffons started a four-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "He's So Fine." In 1971, George Harrison was taken to court accused of copying the song on his 1970 "My Sweet Lord" and was ordered to pay $587,000 to the writers.

1963 - Sixteen-year-old Lesley Gore recorded her breakthrough hit, "It's My Party." Produced by Quincy Jones, the song went on to be a U.S. No. 1 single. The night the song was recorded, Jones found out that Phil Spector had recorded the song with his group The Crystals, so Jones rush-released it to get Gore's version to radio stations first.

He produced the first major commercial release on CD, Billy Joel's 1982 album 

2019 - Singer/songwriter Billy Adams died at age 79. He wrote and recorded the mid-1950s rockabilly staple “Rock, Pretty Mama.” Other songs he recorded in the late '50s include “You Heard Me Knocking,” “True Love Will Come Your Way” and “You Gotta Have a Duck Tail.”

2020 - Soul singer Bill Withers died from heart complications at age 81. His hits include “Just The Two Of Us,” “Lovely Day” and “Use Me.” On “Lovely Day,” he set the record for the longest sustained note on a US chart hit, holding a high E for 18 seconds. His ballad “Ain't No Sunshine” earned him his first Grammy award.

Graeme Edge, drummer with The Moody Blues, is 81.

MC Hammer, born Stanley Kirk Burrell, is 61.
