Alex Chilton, lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star, was born today in 1950. He died March 17, 2010. Chilton's early commercial success in the '60s with the Box Tops was not repeated in later years with Big Star and in solo career, but he drew a loyal following and is often cited as an influence by many indie and mainstream rock artists and bands. We honored Alex Chilton with Big Star's classic "September Gurls."
