Happy Birthday to Paul Simon, who is 73 today.

Simon's fame, influence, and commercial success began as part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, formed in 1964 with musical partner Art Garfunkel. Simon wrote nearly all of the pair's songs, including three that reached No. 1 on the U.S. singles charts: "The Sound of Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", and "Bridge Over Troubled Water". The duo split up in 1970 at the height of their popularity, and Simon began a successful solo career as a guitarist and singer-songwriter, recording three highly acclaimed albums over the next five years. In 1986, he released Graceland, an album inspired by South African township music. Simon also wrote and starred in the film One-Trick Pony (1980) and co-wrote the Broadway musical The Capeman (1998) with the poet Derek Walcott.

Simon has earned 12 Grammys for his solo and collaborative work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2006 was selected as one of the "100 People Who Shaped the World" by Time magazine. In 2011, Rolling Stone magazine named Simon as one of the100 Greatest Guitarists. Among many other honors, Simon was the first recipient of the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2007

1962 - Don Everly collapsed during rehearsals on stage at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London on the eve of a 22 date Everly Brothers UK tour. He was flown back to the US for treatment and the tour continued with Phil Everly performing solo.

1973 - The Rolling Stones started a four week run at No.1 on the US album chart with Goats Head Soup the group's fourth US No.1.

1984 - Stevie Wonder started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with "I Just Called To Say I Love You," it was his 7th US No.1, also No.1 in the UK.

2002 - UK rock band Muse took legal action against Celine Dion after she announced her forthcoming Las Vegas show would be called "Muse". Singer Matt Bellamy from the band said "We don't want anyone to think we're Celine Dion's backing band."

2004 - The US Internal Revenue Service charged 63-year-old Ronald Isley, lead singer of the Isley Brothers, with tax evasion for failing to report income from royalties and performances by the band between 1997 and 2002. He was later found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison.

2013 - Morrissey halted plans to release his autobiography, three days before it was due to be published. The memoirs were set to give details about the 54-year-old's life growing up in Manchester and his relationship with former songwriting partner Johnny Marr. But a statement on his fan website said there had been a "last minute content disagreement" with its publisher. The book was published the following month.
