"When you're making something, you have to be sensitive to what's giving you energy back," says Field Report's Chris Porterfield. "We were just going where the energy was."

That's how Porterfield describes the new sounds on Field Report's latest album, Marigolden. Although Porterfield says the individual band members' musical interests and influences may vary, the place where they all intersect "is this record."

In town as one of four bands featured in the Communion Club Tour, which comes to the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis tonight, Milwaukee-based Field Report stopped at The Current's studio to play some songs off Marigolden and to chat with Mary Lucia.

In many ways, Field Report consider themselves local. The band members met at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and Porterfield grew up in Rochester, Minn.; Porterfield describes how his development as a musician took place within a geographical triangle connecting the Twin Cities, Rochester and Eau Claire.

Listen to the complete interview to hear more about how Field Report have developed as artists and producers over the course of their career thus far; how they can live in the headspace of certain songs over the cycle of an album; how they find working as musicians to be different than the lives of most adults — and how Porterfield poetically describes the magic that makes all the "small indignities and sacrifices" worth it.
