When guitarist Phil Heywood was growing up in Iowa, he had just as much exposure to rock 'n' roll as everyone else, but for some reason, the folk-blues bug bit him. And as his guitar-playing matured, Heywood was learning the styles of Big Bill Broonzy, Merle Travis, Doc Watson and even the late Dave Ray.

Today, Phil's style incorporates even more influences that take him beyond the blues. His new record, Rollin' On, is a collection of some original tunes and covers of songs by some of his newer heroes like Mark Knopfler, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, the Beatles, Bob Dylan and even Bob Marley.

Phil Heywood's CD-release concert is Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Riverview Cafe in Minneapolis. Before the release, he stopped in the Radio Heartland studio to talk about his new record.
