Top five 2014 Albums

1. Wild Animals, Trampled By Turtles

It's just such a melodic, introspective album, every song has a flow to it. One of those albums that allows you to just really get lost in the music.

2. Sun Structures, Temples

The authentic psychedelic sound is what really sells it for me. The album's like a cocktail mix of late 60s Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the Byrds.

3. Hozier, Hozier

Incredibly refreshing album. I'm a huge fan of the soulful, blues-infused rock sound Hozier masterfully crafts. Every song has just a slightly different feel, but all still fit to bring the album together.

4. Bashful Creatures, Hippo Campus

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I was expecting to enjoy it based on how strong their single, "Little Grace," was.

5. Stay Gold, First Aid Kit

Completely original. Not only are their songs pretty, but they're powerful.

Top 10 2014 Songs (in no particular order)

"Jackie and Wilson," Hozier

This rock-heavy track is by far my favorite on the new album.

"Every Morning," J Mascis

Something about this song just gives me hope. Whenever I need motivation to make it through the week, this is what I listen to.

"Violent Shiver," Benjamin Booker

The opening guitar riff is what really draws you in and his uncharacteristic vocals are what keep you listening.

"Riptide," Vance Joy

Such a fun song. Beachy riffs + Vance Joy's dreamy vocals = the perfect road trip jam.

"Left Hand Free," Alt J

The vocals are so nonchalant, which adds an addicting contrast to the purposeful beat.

"Salad Days," Mac Demarco

Pure summer.

"Goats in Trees," Foster the People

I was really surprised by this song. It's still as abstract as most of their music, but it's slightly muted. The song almost has a more down-to-earth feel. Mark Foster's voice does all kinds of fun stuff too, including singing in a register lower than I ever would've guessed he could.

"Gotta Get Away," Black Keys

Favorite track from the Turn Blue album. The guitar's solid.

"Bored in the USA," Father John Misty

An unashamed, brutally honest description of American society. Gives me goosebumps.

Top five 2014 concerts

1. Paul McCartney at Target Field

It's been a lifelong goal of mine to see McCartney and I can finally check that off my bucket list.

2. Jake Bugg at First Avenue

I was actually able to see Jake Bugg twice this year, the other time as a headliner for the Black Keys at Target Center. The Target Center show doesn't even come close to the Mainroom show, but it's cool to see how far he's come in just a year.

3. Fleetwood Mac at Target Center

Not only did Fleetwood Mac start their tour in Minneapolis, but it was the first time in 16 years that Christine McVie has toured with the band.

4. Vampire Weekend at UIC Pavilion

Over the summer I road tripped down to Chicago with a friend to see them. Definitely a memorable show.

5. Festival Palomino at Canterbury Park

It was the first year for this festival, and I can see it being a successful annual event.
