9:30 Coffee Break: Calling an Audible
by Jill Riley and Sean McPherson
July 21, 2015
When music is performed live, it's not uncommon for a singer to give a shout-out to an instrumentalist just before that player enters the song or performs a solo. It's exciting, it often fits the arrangement well, and it draws the audience's attention to a performer or to a specific part of a song.
As it happens, there are a lot of studio tracks that capture the excitement of that element of live performance, where a singer or bandleader will call out to an instrumentalist or to a section of instruments.
So for today's Coffee Break, let's hear some songs that involve calling an audible. What songs do you want to hear that feature a singer or bandleader giving an audible cue to an instrumentalist or section? Send us your requests.
Songs Played
James Brown "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine"
Janelle Monae "Cold War"
The Darkness "I Believe in a Thing Called Love"
