The origin of the observation is unclear, but October 5 is Do Something Nice Day. Similar to Random Acts of Kindness Day (which is February 17), Do Something Nice Day is intended to encourage people — despite our hectic schedules and busy lifestyles — to stop for a moment and do something nice for others.

The "somethings nice" for Do Something Nice Day could be anything that's kind, ranging from saying "hello" to someone, allowing a person ahead of you at the coffee shop, giving a compliment, giving a gift or doing a task or errand for someone with no thought to compensation. What's nice about Do Something Nice Day is there's no set formula; simply doing something nice for someone else is all it takes.

And that got us thinking about how there are a lot of songs that center on a theme of being nice, doing good or trying to be good. Just like Do Something Nice Day, these songs remind us that being good can take some effort — and it's not always easy.

So for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that are about being nice, doing good or trying to be good? Send us your requests.

Songs Played

The Lovin' Spoonful "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice"
