Decades ago, Eliza Gilkyson got all dressed up to tag along with her father, Terry, to the 1967 Academy Awards presentation because Terry's song, "Bare Necessities" (from The Jungle Book) was nominated for Best Original Song. It didn't win.

In 2014, Eliza found herself dressed up again, this time to attend the Grammy Awards presentations because her album, The Nocturne Diaries, was nominated for best folk album. Her 2004 album, Land of Milk and Honey had also been nominated. Neither album won, but the fact that she was nominated, Gilkyson says, was proof to her that she was doing something right.

The Nocturne Diaries, Eliza Gilkyson's latest album, is based on a number of song ideas that came to her in the middle of the night, and she has learned to use those inspirations to get up and write. The result is a collection of songs that has been in many folk DJs' playlists for a while now.

Gilkyson is in the area for a bunch of regional concerts this week with ace multi-instrumentalist Jim Henry. They stopped by the Radio Heartland studio to chat.
