On the cusp of his 70th birthday, the revered singer-songwriter sets down his pen to explore country classics with some stellar duet partners. Stream 'For Better, Or Worse,' in its entirety before it releases on Sept. 30.
Dean Magraw is master guitarist, and he is headlining the first concert in the Red House Live at the Landmark Center concert series, on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m., with special guests Butch Thompson on piano and clarinet and vocalist Prudence Johnson. Before the show, Dean stopped at Radio Heartland to play a few tunes and to chat with Mike Pengra.
Chris Cunningham, formerly of the duo Storyhill, is out with a new solo album called 'If You Knew All Along'. He's on the road promoting that release with touring partner Wes Kirkpatrick, a Nashville songwriter with Colorado roots. Cunningham and Kirkpatrick are trading off songs at duo gigs around Minnesota this weekend, and they took the time to bring their touring show into the Radio Heartland studio.
John Gorka's career-catapulting album, 'I Know,' was released in 1987, but he had actually recorded an earlier version in 1985, which Gorka didn't feel was quite right. Fast-forward to 2016, and Gorka has a different opinion about that earlier session; the older recording has now been released as 'Before Beginning - the Unreleased I Know'. Gorka stopped in to Radio Heartland to talk to Mike Pengra about the two albums and to compare versions of a few tunes.
