Special broadcast: songs of protest, grief, rage, frustration, and hope
May 25, 2021
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd was murdered at 38th Street and Chicago Avenue by Minneapolis Police officers. In the year that has passed since this brutal act, the Twin Cities community and the world at large have reacted with protests, with litigation, with legislation, and with art.
The songs that speak to the police killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo and so many others join a library of music, decades long in the making, that document, heal and challenge a world prone to ignoring the toll of these tragedies.
This special episode of The Message shares songs of protest, grief, rage, frustration, and hope. Sanni Brown, Sean McPherson, and guest co-host Derrick Stevens share songs from across the decades with special attention to recent releases from H.E.R., Leon Bridges, Nur-D, Maria Isa, and more.
