Stretching the Sounds of Hip Hop
September 15, 2021

From time to time, an artist will come along and stretch the canon as to what can be considered a classic within a genre. This week, we mark the anniversary of two such records. In 1996, DJ Shadow released "Introducing," an instrumental hip-hop album that changed the conversation on sampling. And in 2009, Kid Cudi released his debut full-length, "Man on the Moon: The End of Day." This adventurous release is a key document in the genre-bending world that we find ourselves in today. So this week, we're going to celebrate the trend-setting artists who stretched the canon to give us a new sound.
