The Current’s annual free, no-ticket-required Rock the Cradle event for kids and their grownups to explore music, art and culture returns Sunday, March 8 to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Enjoy annual favorites such as the Kids’ Disco Dance Party with Twinkle the mascot, Pop Up Story Time with The Current’s DJs, live music from The Jolly Pops, and more. Find sponsor activities spread throughout the museum, including singalongs and stories in the Amazing Kid Zone from Children’s Minnesota, an art activity for Mia’s Family Day, Classical Kids Storytime, performances by Siama's Congo Roots (presented by Classical MPR), and lots more. Fuel up with free snacks from GoGo squeeZ and get a caffeine boost from Peace Coffee. Rock the Cradle is perfect for kids up to age 8.

Additional Details and FAQ

The Current works closely with the Minneapolis Institute of Art to ensure an enjoyable experience for all guests. To help us reach this goal, please note the following items when preparing for your visit.

The event start time is 11 a.m. families that arrive early may wait in the Minneapolis Institute of Art lobby until the galleries open at 11 a.m.

Parking: On-street and ramp parking are available surrounding the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Paid event parking is available in the ramp next to Mia and at nearby surface lots ($12/day). Free off-site parking and shuttle are available in the Wells Fargo parking ramp at 28th St. East and 4th Ave. South.

Shuttle Route: Approximate driving time: 15 minutes. The shuttle service will run 10 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Strollers and such: To make this event as pleasant as possible for all guests, please leave strollers behind unless they are necessary. Strollers are allowed, though use may be restricted during busy times and in certain activity areas. Note: strollers cannot go into Pillsbury Auditorium. Due to limited capacity, the museum is unable to check strollers in the coat check.

Babies may be worn, but only on the front.

Refrain from carrying backpacks, large bags and umbrellas. A limited (and free) coat and bag check is available at Mia; please plan accordingly. For safety reasons, Mia reserves the right to inspect all items carried into or out of the museum. Small bags and purses are permitted.

Supervise children at all times.

Keep a safe distance from artwork. To protect the art, stay at least one foot away and do not touch the art.

Keep food and drink out of galleries. Food and drink may be purchased at the museum cafes and taken into designated areas in the lobby. Food and drink may be enjoyed in the Kids' Disco and Snack Bar the third floor Reception Hall.

Be aware of emergency procedures. Should a child become separated from their parent or guardian, please notify the closest Mia or The Current employee/volunteer and go directly to the security desk in the museum’s lobby. Security procedures will be put into place, and all employees will be alerted.

Mia's Family Day Artful Compositions
Location: Studios 111 - 113

Create your very own artful compositions using poms poms, buttons, and more on a music sheet with artists and educators from Mia's free Family Day program. On the second Sunday of every month, the museum is filled with hands-on art activities, live music, dance performances, artist demonstrations, family tours and more — all inspired by Mia's incredible collection.

Call to Mind

Call to Mind is APM | MPR’s mental health initiative to foster new conversations about mental health. Call to Mind is curating books for DJ story time and bringing CalmConnect to Rock the Cradle. CalmConnect is a sensorimotor multimedia program designed to transform the mind and body, and is used in more than 10,000 school districts, therapy centers, hospitals, and homes.

DJ Kool Akiem

DJ Kool Akiem is a renowned DJ, music producer and pioneer of the Twin Cities Hip-Hop community. He has shared stages with artists like Atmosphere, Public Enemy, The Roots and many more. Kiddos can collaborate with DJ Kool Akiem to explore the art and science of DJing – scratching, mixing, beat-making with digital and analog sources.

Button Making with MPR Membership
Location: Corridor G263B

Join MPR’s membership team and try your hand at button making. Color your own button and the team will help you assemble it! You can wear it, display it on your jacket, or on your backpack. This activity is fun for kids and their grown ups – make your masterpiece with the membership team and learn about how you can support the public radio that you love.

Bell Museum

All birds have feathers and those feathers come in a variety of colors and patterns to help birds fly, hide from predators or attract a mate. Birds live in a variety of different habitats, eat a wide range of foods and have special adaptations to meet their needs. Become a natural historian as you use your skills of observation to match feathers to birds and birds to habitats in a fun interactive game with the Bell Museum. Follow the tracks and create your own bird track stamp card to take home.

As parents, uncles, aunts, and teachers, this group of Twin Cities-based performers, decided to put their creative talent to the benefit of the little ones. 123 Balloonz teaches and reinforces skills through song, dance, life lessons, and builds neural pathways that allow kids to assert independence in their choices.
