More information

Joe Rainey is a Pow Wow singer from Red Lake Ojibwe in Minneapolis, a city with one of the largest and proudest Native American populations in the country. On Niineta, Rainey demonstrates his command of the Pow Wow style, descending from Indigenous singing that’s been heard across the waters of what is now called Minnesota for centuries, and accompanied by cinematic, bass-heavy production from Minneapolis producer Andrew Broder. The two of them first met backstage at Justin Vernon’s hometown Eaux Claires music festival before encountering each other more frequently through Vernon and Aaron and Bryce Dessner’s 37d03d collective—both contributing to the last Bon Iver album. Depending on the song or the pattern, Rainey's voice can celebrate or console, welcome or intimidate, wake you up with a start or lull your babies to sleep. Each note conveys a clear message, no matter the inflection: We’re still here. We were here before you were, and we never left.

FPA, also known as Frances Priya, is a multidisciplinary artist from Minneapolis. Her full-length, self-produced debut album Yang Chen was released in late 2019. Sound for Silents music curator Doug Benidt notes, “She arranges her seemingly effortless lyrics and complex flow with dreamy instrumentation and cinematic soundscapes, evoking an emotional atmosphere that is sometimes playful, sometimes tender, and always gorgeous.” FPA performs with: Patrick Horigan (keys, guitar), Madison Hallman (vox), Jon Lindquist (percussion), DeCarlo Jackson (trumpet, bass).

Ness Nite is a non-binary, multi-racial, Minneapolis-based, vocalist, songwriter, and producer. Their sound calls upon synthesizers, infectious hooks, rap cadences, and future-r&b feel-good sadness, while their lyrics attempt to hide lonerisms and explore dynamics in relationships and self. In the same world, but still distinct from artists such as Empress Of, Kehlani, Kid Cudi, and Willow. Born in Chicago and later spending years in cities including Milwaukee & NYC, you can hear the voice and thoughts of someone who’s had to reinvent themself time and time again, learning and unearthing inner parts along their journey.

In 2016, after opting out of their sophomore year of college, Ness released their debut EP Nite Time, co-produced by Mike Frey. With this project Ness’s sound began to take root in the Twin Cities, performing alongside artists such as Dizzy Fae, Sophia Eris, and Dua Saleh. Shortly after the release of the EP, Ness signed to LA-based P.O.W. recordings for the 2018 release of debut album, Dream Girl, co-produced by Mike Frey and executive produced, mixed, and mastered by platinum engineer Alex Tumay. Since its release, the album has collected over 1 million streams on Spotify alone.

Most recently, Ness has been putting a hard focus on the producer side of their identity. Since 2020, they have been working with up-and-coming artist JIJA on her debut EP, SIREN, set to release early 2022. Ness is excited to use what they’ve learned from this experience to move forward with their own next project - TBD.
