Today in 1980, The Blues Brothers movie, with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd portraying Elwood and Jake Blues, premiered in NYC with cameo appearances by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown and John Lee Hooker among others. Directed by John Landis, the movie was developed from the The Blues Brothers musical sketch on the Saturday Night Live. At the time, it was one of the most expensive comedies ever made, owing to a production schedule that went out of control and the sheer number of car-crash shots involved in the filming.

Also, Today In:

1977 - Johnny Rotten, lead vocalist of the Sex Pistols, was slashed by some disgruntled thugs who objected to the band's version of "God Save The Queen." The following day, Paul Cook, the group's guitarist, was beaten up.

2010 - John Lennon's handwritten lyrics to The Beatles song, "A Day In The Life," sold for $1.2m at an auction at Sotheby's in New York.
