The Replacements will play two dates at Coachella 2014

The Replacements continue to draw a giant circle around their hometown of Minneapolis with their tour schedule. Late last night the band was revealed to be one of the dozens of high-profile acts set to play this year's Coachella Festival out in Indio, California, which is slated for the weekends of April 11-13 and 18-20, 2014.
Other acts on the bill include OutKast (the other big act to share the bill with the 'Mats on the two Fridays of the fest, April 11 and 18), the Knife, Broken Bells, Beck, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

The pair of Coachella dates are the first that the band have announced since Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson's triumphant headlining set at the Riot Fest in Toronto last August—the first time they had played a show billed as the Replacements since 1991—and their increasingly loose and playful Riot Fest performances in Chicago and Denver in September of 2013, all bolstered by drummer Josh Freese and guitarist David Minehan.
As Chris Riemenschneider pointed out today, Tommy Stinson will be on the road with Guns N' Roses from March 16 through April 9, making the chance of some Minneapolis warm-up shows in advance of Coachella highly unlikely.
The new gig raises big questions for area 'Mats fans: Are they holding out and waiting to play a large festival here in town, on par with the other shows they've played so far? Are they trying to see how many of their hometown followers will trek to other cities to see them play? Are they just messing with us? So many questions!
