9:30 Coffee Break: Long Distance Dedications
June 16, 2014

Casey Kasem, who entertained radio listeners for almost four decades as the host of countdown shows such as "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," he was the voice of many cartoon characters, and a host for television specials. Kasem died early Sunday, according to a Facebook post from his daughter Kerri Kasem.
"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends," Kasem's children -- Kerri, Mike and Julie -- wrote in a statement released by Kasem's representative, Danny Deraney.
Casey Kasem was 82 and had been hospitalized in Washington state for two weeks.
In honor of Casey Kasem's long career in radio we're asking for your long-distance dedications. Give a shout out to someone as far away and we'll do our best Casey Kasem to let them know you're thinking of them.
Dedications Played:
The Decemberists - "Rox in the Box"
I want to dedicate Rox in the Box by the Decemberists to our Oldest son Jacob - who has followed his dreams by going to school for Forestry and is working hard this Summer in the Mountains of Idaho to help pay for his schooling. A few weeks from your 20th birthday your dad and I couldn't be more proud of you. The song is dedicated to you because it was the first concert we took you to and its a good one to listen to when you are doing hard labor!
Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - "Tears of a Clown"
Dear Steve and Jill,
I live in Minneapolis, and my baby sister lives in Madison. She and I are 5 1/2 years apart in age, so, as a result, she and I never really bonded as much as I wished we could. As we get older, I wish we had a better relationship. It's been rocky, but I put on a brave face when it comes to how much I miss her.
Can you please play Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" and send it out to my sister Anna? She's been listening to The Current longer than I have, and it's been about the only common ground we have. Thanks.
Atmosphere - "Shh"
To all my wonderful MSP friends, without whom I would never have discovered The Current, the state fair, First Ave, the Varsity, Fringe Fest, Sebastian Joe's, Yogurt Lab, Gay 90s, Como Park, Saints games, Magers & Quinn, Pizza Luce, the Birchwood Cafe, or any of the other myriad things that make the Twin Cities one of the best and most under-appreciated places in the country! "Shh" - Atmosphere -Jenna, in Chicago
Polica - "Wandering Star"
Happy Two Year Anniversary, Patrick! Here's to more scifi movies and less long-distance. Sending all my love to you in Wisconsin from Washington, DC. XOXO, Taylor
The National - "Fake Empire"
This request goes out to Matthew who is doing peace corps in Togo, Africa. He is one of my best friends and I haven't seeing him in two years. He has introduce me to great music like Swell Season, Mates of State, Metric and many more. Most important band he has introduced to me is The National. The piano riff in the begin of Fake Empire will always remind me of him. My life wouldn't be the same without him and I miss him a lot. He will be coming back to the states this fall and I can't wait. -Meagan
