First Avenue has announced the lineup for its next annual showcase of the best new local bands. PaviElle, Sam Cassidy, Suzie, tiny deaths, Warey, and ZuluZuluu will take the Mainroom stage on Saturday, Jan. 17. The show will be hosted by the Current's David Campbell; Aaron Bolton of Radio K, who also writes our weekly release roundups; and Jason Nagel.

PaviElle is a multi-talented soul singer. Andrea Swensson wrote about PaviElle's journey, which has taken her from Minnesota to Hawaii and back again. “I love to play with a fat ass sound,” PaviElle told Andrea, describing her music. “That’s how it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to knock in your car, it’s supposed to knock in the club. And I think that it’s the millennial in me that likes the bass heavy. I love that. But it’s also the soul in me that has to have all the instrumentation. So I like to integrate the two different sounds.” PaviElle will also perform at the Current's sold-out birthday show at First Ave on Jan. 24.

Sam Cassidy is an Americana artist whom Aaron describes as "twangy, evocative," and "reminiscent of early Jay Farrar." Cassidy's debut album is called Debts.

Suzie is the new alt-pop project by Night Moves' Mark Ritsema. Momentum has quickly built for Suzie's sterling album Born Single, and Suzie landed seventh on City Pages' Picked to Click poll.

Tiny deaths are a collaboration between Claire de Lune (the Chalice) and Grant Cutler (Lookbook, Grant Cutler and the Gorgeous Lords). Cutler now lives in New York; Claire and Grant have played some shows together there, and for local gigs, Claire has been playing as tiny deaths with a custom-assembled band. Their self-titled debut EP has been popping up on many critics' lists of best local releases this year.

Warey are fronted by Channy Leaneagh, featuring the rhythm section of her former band Roma di Luna. It's a bluesier sound than we've previously heard from Leaneagh, but Warey's well-crafted songs will doubtless please fans who know her from Poliça and Roma di Luna. Warey have been playing a residency at Icehouse, so despite the fact that they're a relatively new band, they'll bring a well-honed stage show to First Ave.

ZuluZuluu are an experimental project featuring Greg Grease along with several other MCs, DJs, and producers. The funktronica band, Grease told the Minnesota Daily, were formed at the behest of aliens. There are no rules at a ZuluZuluu show: "It depends on what the aliens tell us to do,” Grease said. “We don’t like to define anything. We’re just waiting for the elements to communicate and see what happens."
