MPR's Movie Maven Stephanie Curtis joins Jill Riley to talk about a new film, Selma, set 50 years ago but with powerful resonance today.

Selma stars David Oyelowo as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but it's not a life-story biopic; instead, the action centers on a period of months in 1965, during which time King and others were working to pass the Voting Rights Act. The story culminates in the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala.

The cast also includes Oprah Winfrey, Tom Wilkinson and Common. Selma opens today and Stephanie says it will likely be nominated for Academy Awards. "There are lots of great faces, lots of really good performances," Stephanie says. "People should go see it."

Selma is rated PG-13 and is playing in theaters everywhere.

Stephanie also discusses Inherent Vice, a film that could be described as stoner noir. It stars Joaquin Phoenix as a gumshoe detective who's trying to help a client while being perpetually baked. "If you've read the book, you need to forget about trying to keep up with the plot," Stephanie says. "This movie is so much fun."

Inherent Vice is rated R and is also playing widely.
