Is there a place for politics in indie rock in 2015?

Calgary post-punk band Viet Cong have been getting more attention for their name than their music. After students took offense with the name, Oberlin College canceled the band's tour stop and issued a lengthy apology underscoring the college's history of being a "progressive and highly conscious institution."

Viet Cong haven't made an official statement about the name, but Andy Gill of Gang of Four has spoken up on the issue, saying that it's ridiculous to ban a band for their name.

Gill had a chance to snap a photo with Viet Cong when they were both at The Current ahead of shows in Minneapolis last night.

Mark Wheat's interview with Andy Gill and John Sterry of Gang of Four is now available on our website. We'll broadcast the complete Viet Cong session during New Hot (10:00-11:00 p.m.) on March 30, but above, you can take a listen to their performance of "Continental Shift" from their session yesterday.
