Throbbing Hive with Wits' John Moe: virtual reality and viral video
June 16, 2015

Every Tuesday at 7:30am Wits host John Moe stops into the Morning Show to share the latest news in Technology.
This week, John Moe stopped by The Current's Morning Show to talk to Jill Riley and Sean McPherson about how when other people are wearing virtual-reality headsets, you might be responsible for the safety of yourself and those around you. Also, a new video helps work out the difference between actors Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard … yes, they're different people.
1. Virtual reality is the hot product at E3 expo, raising questions of how we exist in the world
A big video-game expo known as E3 is kicking off in Los Angeles. "It's a nightmare for the easily sensory-overstimulated or the migraine prone," John says.
One of the items making a big debut at E3 are various virtual-reality headsets; HTC and Sony are among the manufacturers showing off their new hardware that allows people to immerse themselves in an alternate universe of games or movies. "There is the danger of clunking into things and smashing into other people," John explains, and he cites a New York Times article that posits "if you see someone wearing them, the onus is on you to not get smacked in the head."
It's a much more sense-depriving way of moving about in the world compared to, say, earbuds. "It's vaguely insulting when you think about it, because the rest of us have to go through this sucky reality as it is," John says.
2. Viral video - the difference between Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard
Actors Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard were both in The Help, and the confusion only begins there. "If you didn't know better, you'd think they might be the same person," John says. "They're similar in appearance and they've been making a lot of movies. It's much like the old Bill Pullman/Bill Paxton conundrum."
This new video tries to help us all work out the difference between the two women.
