Frank Zappa's widow Gail Zappa has died, after a battle with lung cancer, at age 70. Gail Zappa worked extensively with her husband's archive after his 1993 death, overseeing the release of a number of posthumous albums. Island Records announced that a soundtrack for the Amy Winehouse documentary Amy will be released on Oct. 30. The soundtrack will include numerous Winehouse rarities, as well as tracks from Anthony Pinto's instrumental score for the movie. (Pitchfork)

Father John Misty says that representatives of Taylor Swift contacted him after he deleted his Velvet-Underground-style covers of "Blank Space" and "Welcome to New York," encouraging him to put the tracks back online again. Earlier, Father John Misty explained that he deleted the tracks—posted online in the wake of Ryan Adams's 1989 cover album—because Lou Reed appeared to him in a dream and told him to take them down. Christmas has come early for the family of a prolific American songwriter. You might not recognize the name J. Fred Coots (1897-1985), but he's responsible—with cowriter Haven Gillespie—for the most-performed holiday song of all time. A decision handed down Thursday from the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decreed that the heirs of Coots will now hold the rights to his song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," which had long belonged to EMI.
