Not that we're counting (we totally are) but, Minnesota's pride and joy, is now on Vol. 12 of his Bootleg Series. The latest installment, The Cutting Edge 1965-1966, spans 14 months of recording sessions that resulted in Bringing It All Back Home (1965), Highway 61 Revisted (1965) and Blonde on Blonde (1966), with the full six-CD set featuring more than 100 previously unreleased tracks and alternate takes. In his review of The Cutting Edge 1965-1966—which you can sample in a pre-Nov. 6 release First Listen stream—NPR Music's Tom Moon writes:
This archival release is a heaping helping of micro, the back pages and pre-histories of songs listeners know by heart. Laced with outtakes, rehearsal tracks and song ideas that were later discarded, it illustrates just how mutable music can be, and how tiny decisions, made impulsively in the heat of the moment, can mean the difference between a pleasant track and a screaming fireball of world-changing sound.
More than the other Bootleg Series documents, this one shows Dylan as not just prone to experimentation, but also a resourceful recycler of his own top-shelf ideas. Images and characters recur, and sometimes metaphors, basslines and other devices echo from one song to another.
