Music News: ‘MTV Classic’ channel to milk millennial nostalgia

The cable channel VH1 Classic will be rebranded MTV Classic, with new programming that focuses on MTV staples from the late '90s and early 2000s. That will include music videos seen on shows like Total Request Live, as well as cult-favorite programs like Beavis and Butthead and Daria. (AP)

Prince’s family have announced a date and venue for an official tribute concert: Oct. 13 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. "We are excited for the opportunity to bring everyone together for the official family celebration of Prince’s life, music and legacy, and there is no better place to do it than his hometown of Minneapolis," said the family in a statement. Rare Boss tunes to surface
Bruce Springsteen will release an 18-track album on Sept. 23. Chapter and Verse will accompany Springsteen's autobiography — being published four days later — and will include, in addition to an appropriately autobiographical-leaning selection of the Boss's previously released songs, five previously unreleased tracks from his very early career. Beatles Shea show to hit theaters
A restored concert film of the Beatles' Aug. 15, 1965 concert at Shea Stadium will screen at theatrical showings of the new Ron Howard documentary Eight Days A Week: The Beatles Touring Years. The documentary premieres on Sept. 15. (Billboard)
Early Pink Floyd material to be released
A massive 27-disc box set spotlighting the early years of Pink Floyd will be released on Nov. 11. The Early Years 1965-1972 will include seven hours of previously unreleased live recordings, and what's been described as "the Floyd Holy Grail": eight tracks the band recorded in 1967 for a film that was never released. Though the existence of the tracks has long been known, they've never yet been leaked to bootleggers. Additional rare and unreleased material will be welcomed by fans of the late Syd Barrett — the band's founding frontman, who parted ways with Floyd in 1968. (The Guardian)
