It's been nearly 10 years since Corinne Bailey Rae released her self-titled debut. Now, in 2016, she's touring in support of her third album, The Heart Speaks in Whispers.

Following a gig at First Avenue, Corinne Bailey Rae and her band — Mikey Wilson (drums), John McCallum (guitar), Matt Walker (piano and bass) and Steve Brown (piano) — stopped by The Current to perform live in-studio and to chat with host Mary Lucia.

The new songs certainly showcase Corinne's intrepid songwriting, but "Like a Star," the last song that Bailey Rae performed in The Current studio, is the song that started it all. Originally written for her riot grrrl-inspired band Helen, it's the song that launched her solo career; a perfect complement to the soulful and jazzy elements of her songwriting.

"The 'indie' thing is really important to me because it makes me realize that you don't have to be a trained musician to make music. You don't have to know what you're doing, you don't have to know the rules, you don't have to know what the chords are called."

Stream the full in-studio session to hear Corinne and Mary chat about Pump Aid, a charitable organization in Africa that helps to supply clean water, whom she'd rather be trapped in a studio with — Thom Yorke or Jarvis Cocker — and an entertaining conversation about Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" inspired by their appearance on Later ... with Jools Holland.
