World Smile Day is celebrated on the first Friday of October every year and it commemorates the creation of the smiley face, first made by Harvey Ball in 1963.

Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, didn't like how commercialized his symbol had become so he created World Smile Day to encourage people to devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world.
