There's a new horror film called XX, and it's closely associated with one of the core artists on The Current's playlist. No, not the xx: St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark. She directed and co-wrote Birthday Party, the second of four different segments in the film.

XX is an anthology film, meaning it includes four different segments. They're not related, except that they're all...well, horrific. There's also a recurring theme of maternity, which figures in three of the four segments, including Birthday Party. All four of the segments are also written and directed by women, hence the chromosomal title.

The first segment, The Box (written and directed by Jovanka Vucokic), is about a young boy who mysteriously loses his appetite after peering into a stranger's wrapped package. Clark's film, Birthday Party (co-written with Roxanne Benjamin), is a stylish and macabre — and, not incidentally, comedic — story about a mom who goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid spoiling her young daughter's big day.

The scariest segment is the third film, Don't Fall (written and directed by Benjamin). A camping trip goes awry when four friends venture into a remote area with eerie rock paintings that portend a supernatural presence. Finally, Her Only Living Son (written and directed by Karyn Kusama) could be subtitled Rosemary's Custody Battle.

XX opens today at St. Anthony Main Theatre, where it's playing for just one week. The Current is teaming up with the Film Society of Minneapolis St. Paul to give away seven pairs of passes to see XX.
