DJ Pick of the Week: The Jesus and Mary Chain, 'Always Sad'

We've been adding a lot of new music lately, and one that's really stuck out to me is the new song from The Jesus and Mary Chain. Now it's called "Always Sad," and so when I introduce the song on the air, I always want to mournfully say, "Always Sad…"

But the song is actually really poppy and sunny, to tell you the truth. And that's what I like about The Jesus and Mary Chain. If you're new to The Jesus and Mary Chain, go grab their first album, Psycho Candy, and you'll hear what I'm talking about. Psycho Candy is one of those landmark albums that went on to influence so much music, especially a lot of music that we play on The Current.

But The Jesus and Mary Chain have a new record, Damage and Joy, and they haven't released a new record in close to 20 years. The single, "Always Sad," has such classic '60s pop influence, and that is right up my alley. The song is still shoegazey, it's still full of feedback, and for me, it just sounds like a classic Jesus and Mary Chain song. So enjoy!

The Jesus and Mary Chain's show is coming up at the Palace Theatre here in St. Paul on May 9.
