DJ Pick of the Week: SZA, 'Drew Barrymore'

Before I even heard the record I was seeing SZA's name everywhere. Then I saw that she was influenced by Ella Fitzgerald, Emily Dickinson, Bjork, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Wu-Tang. That's a compelling mix, so I took a listen.

While many songs on the album showcase a confident and even boastful SZA, I love the way "Drew Barrymore" perfectly encapsulates insecure love. SZA said that she named it "Drew Barrymore" because of the 90s movies that she loved to watch that featured those girls going through moments of insecurity.

It's a perfect mix of nostalgia, cleaver lyrics about everyday life, and a groove to nod your head to.

SZA is in town Friday, September 1 playing a sold out show at First Avenue.
