In the intervening seven years since their last album, the members of Wolf Parade were spread far and wide from their native Canada; for instance, one lived in Los Angeles, another lived in Finland. "Everyone was scattered to the wind, like dandelion seeds," says guitarist and vocalist Dan Boeckner.

But they never lost touch with one another, and eventually they regrouped in a studio in Shawnigan Lake, British Columbia, where they quickly re-acclimated to one another. "It was really just the first jams that were kind of weird," Boeckner recalls. "Maybe the first jam only, and even then, everything kind of fell into place really quickly."

It fell into place so well, that the band released their new album, Cry Cry Cry, on Oct. 6 of this year. In town to play a show in the First Avenue Mainroom, Wolf Parade stopped at The Current for a session hosted by Jade.

Although Wolf Parade were spread across the world, they remain a proud Canadian band — and they unabashedly express their admiration for their fellow Canadian songwriter, the late Leonard Cohen.

Acknowleding Cohen's additional work as a political writer, Boeckner says he doesn't believe it's a musician's job to inform the audience about politics or current events. "I think the role of the musician is essentially to provide comfort to people who are going through some stuff, who have to life through this stuff that we all have to live through right now," Boeckner says, "this sort of breakdown of democratic institutions and hard swing towards whatever kind of populist, nationalist oligarchy that is unholy Frankenstein of all those ideologies. Our job, I think, is to gather people together around a metaphorical fire — which tonight, will be First Avenue — and hopefully connect with them and provide them some kind of comfort for the duration of the time that we're on stage."
