I spent a few days last week in Kansas City, Mo., for the 30th annual Folk Alliance International Conference. It's a wonderful venue for musicians to attract attention to their work — from promoters, record labels, festival producers and DJs, as well as from fellow singer-songwriters.

One musician I saw at Folk Alliance was Letitia VanSant from Baltimore. She had 10 performances in four days at the conference, which is a typical schedule for many performers there. Letitia courageously left a comfortable 9-to-5 job to set sail on a new career as a singer-songwriter, and after a few years, her national debut album, Gut It To The Studs, has just been released. She and her musical partner David McKindley-Ward were in Minnesota on their most recent road trip and stopped in the studio.
