Music News: 'Empire Records' to be Broadway musical

On Sunday — Rex Manning Day 2018 — the news broke that Empire Records is being developed into a Broadway musical. Carol Heikkinen, screenwriter of the 1995 comedy film, is adapting her script for the stage. "I think the way that teenagers feel about music hasn't changed," she says. "They define themselves by it."

Zoe Sarnak, who's writing music and lyrics for the show, says that Manning's song "Say No More, Mon Amour" might appear in the musical. "It captures Rex's washed-up pop vibe so well," she says. (Rolling Stone)

Q-Tip headed to NYU

Rap legend Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) is headed to New York University, where he'll teach a course on the intersection of jazz and hip-hop. "The seven-class schedule will cover artists like Public Enemy, the Roots, Lauryn Hill, and Kendrick Lamar," reports Pitchfork.

Post office named for Merle Haggard

On SNL, Cardi B reveals pregnancy

Congratulations to Cardi B, who's expecting a baby. The pop hip-hop star revealed the news in a form-fitting white dress during her performance on Saturday Night Live, notes Pitchfork. "Cardi and Migos’s Offset have been dating for over a year, and though rumors swirled around her pregnancy, she had yet to confirm it."

Arcade Fire cover the Cranberries

During a Friday night concert in Dublin, Ireland, Arcade Fire covered "Linger" by the Cranberries in honor of the late Dolores O'Riordan. "Win Butler and company performed the chorus of the beloved Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can't We? single before segueing back into Arcade Fire's 'Everything Now,'" notes Rolling Stone.
