Among many others, musicians Neil Young and Miley Cyrus have lost their homes in the wildfires sweeping through California. Each have responded to the news online; while Cyrus tweeted she was "completely devastated" about losing the Malibu house she shared with fiancé Liam Hemsworth, Young took the opportunity to criticize President Donald Trump on his website Neil Young Archives. "California is vulnerable — not because of poor forest management as DT (our so-called president) would have us think," Young said. "We are vulnerable because of Climate Change; the extreme weather events and our extended drought is part of it." Cyrus and Young both praised firefighters, and Cyrus encouraged people to donate to evacuation relief funds.

Tame Impala's Kevin Parker lost nearly all of his recording equipment and musical instruments to the fire.

The wildfires sweeping through California are officially the deadliest on record in California; an estimated 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, and at least 31 people have died.

Joe Perry recovering from backstage collapse

Aerosmith's Joe Perry was full of surprises on Saturday night. Not only did he join Billy Joel onstage at Madison Square Garden, performing his band's hit "Walk This Way," the guitarist reportedly collapsed backstage afterward. According to TMZ, the 68-year-old suffered from lung congestion and struggled to breath. Perry's publicists released this statement: "Following a guest performance during Billy Joel's show last night at Madison Square Garden, Joe Perry experienced shortness of breath and was treated backstage by paramedics who gave the guitarist oxygen and used a tracheal tube to clear his airway before taking him to a hospital. This morning, Perry remains in the hospital where he is alert and responsive." (Billboard)

Aerosmith had just announced a Las Vegas residency called "Deuces Are Wild," which is set to start next spring.

Elvis Presley receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

The King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump this week, making him one of the few recipients of the United States' highest civilian honor. The president's other picks included the late Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, Utah senator Orrin Hatch, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, the late Yankees slugger Babe Ruth, Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle/Minnesota Supreme Court justice Alan Page, and Miriam Adelson, an Israeli-American physician and half of a couple who donated an estimated $113 million to the GOP this year.

President Barack Obama's musician honorees included Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, and Gloria Estefan, and Barbra Streisand.

Iceland music grapples with "booming" tourism industry

Reporting from Iceland, Jay Gabler asks María Rut Reynisdóttír, project manager of Reykjavik Music City, about concerns that tourism is swallowing up the local music scene. Reykjavik clubs Rosenberg on Klapparstígur, Green Room, Faktorý, and NASA have all closed in the last six years as hotels and gift shops continue to spring up; tourism is "blooming," Reynisdóttír says, yet visitors aren't necessarily engaging in local music. She isn't sure about how to solve the squeeze, but she has a few ideas: subsidizing construction of new venues, building relationships between arts ambassadors and real estate owners, and connecting tourists to the scene through resources like a one-stop concert calendar. She's working on Icelandic talent cultivation, including a regular battle of the bands.

The return of Dido

Dido has announced forthcoming album Still on My Mind, which will be her first in six years when it drops on March 8. She's planning an 27-date tour through Europe and North America next spring — her first tour in 15 years.

The new album came to be thanks to Dido's brother, Rollo, a British producer known for his work in electronic group Faithless. "I just wanted to hang out with him and make music," Dido said, so she called him, and he cleared his schedule. According to a press release, they recorded all her vocals on a couch.

The British singer has sold more than 30 million albums since 1999, when she released debut album No Angel and scored a hit with "Thank You." With her permission, Eminem would later sample that song in his own "Stan" and invite Dido to co-star in the music video.
