If Cardi B or H.E.R. win Album of the Year at the Grammys on Feb. 10, it will be first time since 1983 that an album wins that honor without ever having been released on CD. We've seen this coming, or we should have: CDs accounted for just 18% of the recording industry this year, compared to 90% in 2007.

Toto IV (yes, the album that ends with "Africa") was the last Album of the Year not available on CD at the time. The following year, Michael Jackson's Thriller became the first compact disc release to win album of the year. (Billboard)

In other Grammys news, the Recording Academy has announced the winners of this year's Lifetime Achievement Awards: Black Sabbath, Billy Eckstine, Donny Hathaway, Julio Iglesias, Sam & Dave, Dionne Warwick, and George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. That motley crew will be honored with a special ceremony on May 11, and probably a mention on the televised Grammys. (Consequence of Sound)

Super Bowl music updates

Travis Scott will perform at the Super Bowl LIII halftime show, reports Rolling Stone. Wait, instead of Maroon 5? No, in addition to Maroon 5. Given that collaborations have helped that band stay on the top of the charts, people have generally assumed that their halftime show would include guests like Scott, Cardi B, SZA, or Kendrick Lamar.

Meanwhile, details are emerging about musical performances in Atlanta around the time of the big game on Feb. 3. A Super Bowl Music Fest, held over three days leading up to the game, will feature performances by artists including Aerosmith, Bruno Mars, Post Malone, and — there's that name again — Cardi B. The festival's first day, on Jan. 31, will celebrate the city's hip-hop scene with Ludacris, Migos, Lil Yachty, Lil Baby, Metro Boomin, and Lil Jon. (Rolling Stone)

Songwriter Jerry Chesnut dies at 87

Songwriter Jerry Chesnut has died, due to respiratory problems, at age 87. Chesnut was known for his skill at telling the stories of working people, imagining characters like truck drivers and factory workers in songs that became hits for dozens of artists — including Johnny Cash, Del Reeves, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Loretta Lynn, and Willie Nelson. His heartbreak ballad "Good Year for the Roses" was a top five country hit for George Jones, and was later recorded by Elvis Costello. (New York Times)

Atoms for Peace reunite

80% of the supergroup Atoms for Peace reunited on Wednesday at Thom Yorke's show in Los Angeles. Yorke was joined onstage by Flea, Nigel Godrich, and Joey Waronker — which meant that only the group's least famous member, Mauro Refosco, was missing for the song "Atoms for Peace." (Stereogum)

Today's viral clip: Choir sings Lion King

Today's viral clip comes from Michael Korte, the YouTube star whose channel you might have visited for the Hamilton/Beyoncé mashup #HAM4BEY, or for the Rent/Gaga mashup #GAGA4RENT. He has a new video that doesn't mash up The Lion King songs with anything but themselves, featuring a choir of female vocalists in a desert setting. The title: "Queens Sing King." (Billboard)
