Abby Jeanne is a rising musician out of Milwaukee. On her website, Jeanne writes: "I am just a product of a haunted jukebox and the golden heart degenerates."

The phase originates in one of Abby Jeanne's favorite places in Milwaukee, the Hi-Fi Cafe, where, Jeanne explains, one can find the oldest jukebox in Wisconsin. "The 'haunted jukebox' is literally that jukebox," she says. "There's something so magical about it: The spirit and everything just runs through you; the spirit of rock and roll runs through you like a religion in a way. That's what the haunted jukebox is to me. And the 'golden-heart degenerates' is everyone who has been in pain, loss, addiction, whatever it is, who has gotten out through art — including myself. So the haunted jukebox and the golden hearts together as one."

It's part of a beautiful story that Abby Jeanne is writing for herself as her music career continues to grow, a story that brought her to The Current studio for a session hosted by Mark Wheat. Jeanne's new album is Music Box Dancer, which just released on January 4, and she and her band will perform at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Although Abby Jeanne is a multi-instrumentalist, she says her primary instrument is her voice — which, on hearing these soulful songs, becomes abundantly clear.

Jeanne is fiercely proud of her Milwaukee roots, and even more so, the many artists who share that home base. "There's so much going on in Milwaukee," she says. "You could say 'the music scene,' but I think it's really just the city in general. Lots of art, lots of music, so many different things."
